Today has been one of those beautiful days when I’ve heard some new music that I really like.
Chris recommended this Tomatito clip. Amazing flamenco guitar:

Andreas recommended this zeibekiko dance. Beautiful Greek music that I would never have heard in a million years.

I’ve always picked up new music either by chance or by recommendation. I love it when someone says, “check this out!”, and it’s something I just wouldn’t have come across normally. So – in Internet we trust! Let’s share some recommendations for hidden gems; preferably via a link to something we can hear. The kinds of things that you probably know we’ve not heard.
Over to you…
** Rob Mullarkey has set up this Spotify playlist that you can add to, and check out some new music. Feel free to add to it. **
Great thread – I keep starting these, cos it’s really important that we spread the word about great music!
Anyway, one of my faves at the moment is IWrestledABearOnce – completely insane death-metal/electronica/prog cross-over, with a wikkid sense of humour. :) Much fun.
While we’re getting all metal, I also love the Blotted Science album – intrumental technical metal. Beautifully done.
neither are easy listening, but both well worthwhile ;)
There are a bunch of interesting suggestions in the ‘To The Left Of The Mainstream‘ thread on solobasssteve.com too.
How about we bung them all in here…

Thanks for the top tips
Collaborative playlists are the way ahead! I put a few recent finds in there to get us started, but it definitely needs more metal. Drag anything in there that tickles your fancy. Anyone who clicks the link will add the playlist to their spotify account.
good right?
Some more voracious guitarplaying from a master virtuoso. Absolutely mindblowing, but beautiful beyond measure…

… Pretty good voice-leading…jeez…
Thanks everyone!
Steve: Nice one! Sounds like a funny version of Meshuggah. That reminds me, there’s a long but really interesting Ben Monder interview here [http://www.wfmu.org/special.php/CB] where he’s just playing, and talking about, his favourite music. He mentions Meshuggah. He also plays some unreleased free duets that are fantastic, and plays live in the studio.
Such a great idea, Rob! Will put the link at the top too! Love your 3 tunes :-) especially the Spiegel im Spiegel. Collaborative editing is the way forward! We could write a book collaboratively…
Segovia! I’ve got a tune on my forthcoming album that uses the chord progression to Etude No.1 as a contrafact. The second half, with the descending diminished thing, is such a challenge to make it sound interesting. Julian Bream playing No.11 is great – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLUBfntuZPQ
Thanks!
Some great stuff been put up already, Ive listened towfmu for quite a few years now, especially Irwin and his ‘outsider stuff’, hes written a great book called Songs in the key of Z. anyway here is one of my fave things, a lovely repetitive piece by Jim O’rourke, the man can do no wrong in my eyes – http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&hs=d43&q=Jiom%20Orourke&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wv#q=jim+O%27rourke&hl=en&emb=0&client=firefox-a&start=10
Oh cobblers I messed that up, try this instead -http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-3823664149920548883&ei=VTRJSqLpCcG9-Aa_s_n9Bg&q=jim+O%27rourke&hl=en&client=firefox-a

Love Gastr Del Sol sadly missed now, here are my two faves by them

Hey Jon,
Loved those tracks. The Sea and Cake came up as related to Gastr Del Sol, which reminds me of Sam Prekop. Are they linked to GDS? Here’s my fave Prekop song – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nQN9yC7rOs
Nice clips mike, that version of poinciana on the spotify list was great. have you heard of petroloukas Chalkias from greece? hes a clarinet player that really gets a great tone out of the low register..

Wow. That Florence Foster Jenkins is brutal. I’ll try and add a few tracks to the list. Really enjoyed the Poulenc, Karim Ziad,Jimmy Smith & the Taraf de Haidouks.
added some guitar, folk, prog & klezmer.
The Ted Killian was passed to me by a friend in the states. I figured not many will have come across him.
I saw Eliza Carthy sing Foolish One on a televised concert a few years back. This is the version recorded by her aunt (who wrote it).
The Hammill track always come to me on the rare occasions I find myself on the underground in London. I’m not sure why.
The Koby Israelite tune just makes me smile.
Thanks, Dave. Listening now! Really like the intro to the Ted Killian and I haven’t heard any of the other tracks so double thanks :) I saw Eliza Carthy do a little gig in a coffee shop here in town. She’s ace. Amazing to have so many musical relations. Going to retweet out this list…
just added my suggestions from earlier in the comments to the list, and two other tunes –
‘Patience’ by Redbird I love for two reasons – firstly, it’s an incredible album that was made with one mic in a shed in Wisconsin… Secondly, the song is a rare one by Mark Sandman, singer/bassist with Morphine, who died about 10 years ago, did album after album of awesomeness with Morphine, but clearly had a load of other songs that were just as good. This is one.
The other tune is a cover of ‘I Dream A Highway’ by Gillian Welch, played here by Elan Mehler. Lovely lovely stuff. The original is magique too :)
Great! The Blotted Science is mental. Love it! Patience is awesome too. All good, thanks :) Someone added some rain, which I like too. Big fan of rain.
Hey Mike,
Just added one of my favourite John Fahey tunes to the playlist.
That’s super sweet. Thanks, Andy.
thought you’d like Blotted Science – Ron’s nearly as fast as you. :) Check out the rest of the album, it all sounds like Jim Hall, crossed with Brian Eno. ;)
Have you heard ‘Drobak Sarsy’ by Eivind Aarset? Takes a while to get going, but a *big* finish!

Listening now. Thanks, Dave. Sounds great. Reminded me a bit of Satriani at the end. Cool :)
